Gate to stop VIP misuse of airport emergency lane

Nagpur: Continuing misuse of emergency lane in city airport's Drop and Go zone has led authorities to construct a new gate that will be locked at the entrance of the lane. This follows declaration made in September 2013 converting the erstwhile VIP lane into emergency lane by Mihan India Limited (MIL), the airport operator.
Even six months later, the emergency lane has not been completely effective in achieving its objectives. The main aim of this conversion was to stop the parking of VIP and other vehicles in the lane nearest to the terminal building. The parking of vehicles in close proximity of the airport building was viewed as a security threat by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) during its security review. Also, keeping the lane free would allow easy entry of vehicles such as fire tenders, ambulances and police vehicles during an emergency.
However, it is not uncommon to see VIP and police vehicles parked at leisure in the lane. This includes not only police vehicles on duty but also those that come to fetch or drop off senior government officials or politicians. The private security of the airport and the traffic police have failed to ensure that the emergency lane remains vacant.
