Flying training school at Jakkur reopens

Bangalore: Three months after operations were suspended over glaring safety concerns, the cloud of uncertainty that was hanging over the future of the Government Flying Training School has finally cleared. The training school at Jakkur Airfield has restarted normal flying operations after getting the government nod, bringing cheer to many flying students.

Training operations at the school were suspended on June 8 after a 22-km elevated expressway built adjacent to the airstrip was found to be a major safety threat — the expressway reduced the operational portion of the runway by half.

Fixed wing aircraft like Microlites and Cessnas require a long runway distance before picking up speed and taking off. The expressway was perceived as a threat and flying operations were suspended, officials said.
