HAL seeks initiative to upgrade Jeypore airstrip

Bhubaneswar: The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) at Sunabeda in Koraput district has requested Biju Patnaik Airport director to expedite upgrading of the airstrip at Jeypore into a full-fledged airport to facilitate transportation of aircraft engines by air.

The engines are currently being sent to Visakhapatnam by road and from there flown to different defence air bases.

"It is a cumbersome process and takes up a lot of time. The nearest airport is at Visakhapatnam and military transport aircrafts fly the engines to their destinations," said HAL additional general manager (helicopters and services) S Pandit.

This has been the practice since HAL was set up here for manufacturing turbo jet, other aircrafts and helicopter engines. The HAL has manufactured more than 1,000 aero engines till now.
