Modernise Existing Airport: Former MP

Visakhapatnam: The existing airport at Visakhapatnam should be modernised before constructing the proposed green-field airport, former MP and GITAM University president MVVS Murthy has said.
In a detailed report submitted to chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, during the latter’s visit to Visakhapatnam Monday, Murthy opined that modernisation of the existing airport will meet the requirements of Vizagites till the implementation of the green-field airport. “While the length of the present runway is 10,500 feet, the capacity of the terminal building is only 20,000 sqm. The airport thus cannot handle even the existing domestic traffic properly (landing of around 18 flights every day). The length of the runway should be extended by another 1,000 feet to facilitate arrival of wide-bodied aircrafts easily.”
