Bad weather hits flights from Pantnagar airport

Haldwani/Pantnagar: Six out of eight flights from Pantnagar airport to Indira Gandhi International Airport were cancelled this month due to bad weather, technical snags and low visibility. Incessant rains across the state and snowfall in hilly areas have lowered temperatures.

Upgradation of the airport is also required to develop it as a model airport in the Kumaon region. The airport also need various equipments like CAT III, VHF Omni Directional Radio Range (VOR), which improve visibility in extreme weather conditions and help flights land safely, are still to be installed in the airport said the director.

"These systems will enable us to use complex high-intensity approach light systems which in turn will provide more clarity to pilots and ensure safe landing and hence no cancellation of flights due to bad weather resulting in low visibility on the runway," said BD Joshi, airport director.

Right now the airport is equipped with Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) and runway lights to encounter problem of low visibility which is inefficient during extreme conditions.
