Port Blair: In a major haul of marine wealth, officials of the Forest and Fisheries Department stumbled upon a huge consignment of dried sea cucumbers and Trochus shells at the cargo section of the Port Blair airport today. Consignment of about 150 kgs of dried sea cucumbers kept in three containers of 50 kg each and 666 kgs of Trochus shells in 11 containers were meant for some unknown destination.
According to Mr. Naveen Kumar, DCF (Wild Life), the Forester, Mrs Farida Bibi and the two Assistant Fisheries Guards namely Mohan Lal and Dilip Kumar became suspicious when the man who had brought the containers at the cargo section failed to give plausible answer about the articles inside the containers. While the officials busied themselves in opening the containers, the unidentified managed to escape from the scene on some pretext. Both the items fall under the schedule 39, 49 ( A – B) section, 50 of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 which prohibits killing them.
The Assistant Director (Fisheries), Mr. Arif Mustafa told this correspondent that the seized consignment of sea cucumbers was initially brought to the Fisheries office from where it was handed over to the Forest Department since the Wild Life laws are much more stringent and effective to deal with such illegal acts.
