On CM’s table this week: Pune airport project

Pune: The proposed international airport in Pune stuck on the drawing board for years will come up for discussion at a meeting convened by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis this weekend. The project has not been able to take off. A suitable site for the project has eluded the implementing agency.

Officials said that the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) sent a request to the chief minister, who is also the chairman of MADC, to convene a meeting to discuss the issue. Land in Chakan, one of the probable sites, was later found to be not feasible by the MADC and it decided to look south of Khed Special Economic Zone (SEZ). That idea also ran into rough weather, and the hiccup pertained to some of the land falling under SEZ.

The delay has became an irritant for MADC officials. “We seem to be heading nowhere as of now. Discussions at the meeting may give some directions. Even as there are talks of a metro, BRTS, ring road and other projects, there has been no headway in finding a site for the airport project though sanction for other airports in the state is being granted,’’ said a senior MADC official.
