Trichy: By inviting tenders for the environmental impact assessment a month ago, the Airports Authority of India has given an impetus to the new integrated terminal building project at the Trichy International Airport.
The authority is expected to finalise a contractor to undertake the assessment work in a few days. The Rs 232-crore airport expansion project is yet to gain momentum though the Union civil aviation ministry gave its approval long back.
In a year, the airport handles around 11 lakh passengers though the current terminal has the capacity to handle only 5 lakh passengers.
Once the contractor is finalised, soil testing and other impact on environment due to the project would be conducted.
Currently, the airport terminal stands in a 12,000 square feet area that can handle about 250 passengers at a time. Speaking to TOI, airport director BCH Negi said, "The new terminal will be standing at an area of about 18,000 square feet and the total size of the terminal alone will be at 30,000 square feet."
