FAIRcraft of a fighting spirit

A sortie with the MIG4 or lockheed martin’s F-16 keeps suman sharma agile. She is a force to reckon with. With a tenacity and singleminded focus on the task ahead, she soars high
She was the first woman to co-pilot the mighty Russian-made MiG4, and the first civilian to fly Lockheed Martin’s next generation fighter aircraft F-16. Journalist and writer Suman Sharma made a fleeting appearance at the Aero India 2015, to co-pilot Bell’s 407 GX on the second day of the show.
Her petite frame is clad in a biker jacket and boots and it’s evident that this woman is tough as nails. All her life, she has broken past these limitations, making a name for herself in the male-dominated world of defense aviation. “In our patriarchal society, chauvinism raises its ugly head in almost every sphere.”
She has been mocked, isolated and even sabotaged as she fought her way to her first sorties. Even so, she consigns all this to the fringes — Suman’s first priority is to stay physically and mentally agile at all times — with her kind of work, there is no other choice.
