Hyderabad: The Telangana government may have to rethink about its ambitious plans of building greenfield airports in all the districts due to lack of funds and other issues. The government has now asked the infrastructure and investment department to take up only three airports in the first phase - at Warangal, Kothagudem and Adilabad. Official sources said that the airports at Nizamabad, Nalgonda and Mahbubnagar may not materialise due to fund crunch and restrictions imposed on developing airports within 150 km radius of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Shamshabad.
In fact, chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had announced a slew of new airports even at small places such as Shameerpet and Ghatkesar. But the agreement between the Chandrababu Naidu government in undivided AP and GMR (developer of RGIA) does not permit these new airports. Officials said that the development of Warangal airport is being given top priority.
The airport, located at Mamnur in the district, was constructed several decades ago and is defunct now. The previous Congress government had entered into an agreement with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for redeveloping the airport along with one in Kadapa, but there was no progress due to paucity of funds.
