Critically ill patients forced to wait for hours at airport as govt agencies battle out over petty issues

New Delhi: Red tapism and lackadaisical attitude of various agencies are hampering emergency medical evacuation of passengers at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). Several passengers allege lack of coordination among the Customs department, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), immigration officials and airlines, which ignore inconvenience meted out to flyers who seek immediate medical attention.

Ill passengers many a time had to wait for hours in the airport owing to the "ego issues" of these agencies. Recently, a passenger - Vijay Sallan - had to wait at the airport for hours due to procedural delays even though he was suffering from chronic migraine. Though he was given initial medical treatment, the airline staff said he was not fit to travel. Following this, wheelchair-bound Sallan went to the medical room of Terminal 3 and requested airlines executives to allow him to leave, according to sources.
