Crackers, festive lights distract pilots

Bhubaneswar: Beaming of high intensity lights during festivals and fairs is distracting pilots, who approach the runaway at the Biju Patnaik International Airport from Baramunda. Some pilots have brought the matter to the notice of airport director Sharad Kumar.

Kumar said similarly bursting of crackers near the runway is also distracting pilots.

"In April, we declared peripheral areas of the airport as 'no cracker zone' but it is yet to become so. We have written to police and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) regarding use of high intensity lights during the festive season near Baramunda," he added.

"Bursting of crackers during marriage and immersion processions are a major security threat to aircraft," Kumar said.

The airport's operation area close to its runway borders Gandamunda, Pokhariput, Sundarpada, Baramunda and Jagamara. Airport authorities had conducted a survey, which revealed that the runway looks blurred when crackers burst or high-power light is thrown into the sky. Baramunda is known for being a cluster of hosting several festivals, orchestras, yatras and melas.
